Population Health and Evidence-Based Treatment Respects the Individuality of the Patient

Does evidence-based treatment mean that our patient will always have to undergo an MRI if she experiences certain symptoms?  Does it have to map to one clinical pathway?

Out of respect for the individuality of the patient and the different symptoms, medical history and other factors that a patient may present, we have historically been dependent on the clinician to map out the span of available options and select the best treatment for the patient in consideration of their individual factors.

Until very recently, we weren’t fully able to respect that individuality when determining the best treatment.  Oh how times have changed.  Now only is that individuality available, it is being increasingly leveraged by the clinical community.

Cognitive computing is alive and well within the healthcare industry.

It is heartening to anecdotally hear evidence to a strengthened partnership between clinical leadership and healthcare analytics relative to “learning from our data”.

A few key themes are present here.

  1. The idea that the information gleaned from outcome analytics can be construed as a relevant learning to our patient-specific clinical decision-making going forward;
  2. Approaching analytic output as “our data”.  That we, clinicians and healthcare analysts, are working;
    together to understand and leverage ‘trusted, quality assured’ healthcare outcome information.
  3. Perhaps most profound ….  the increasingly heard concept that clinical decision-making is not proprietary, does not define the competitive advantage in the marketplace.  As quoted by one healthcare executive, “We compete on execution”.

It is an exciting time to be servicing healthcare.  More and more, we are learning from each other, leveraging that information to achieve our Triple Aim: Health. Affordability. Quality.
