With the number of potential caregivers for every 80+ year old person (caregiver support ratio) projected to sharply decline to four-to-one by 2030 from seven-to-one in 2010, technical innovations, such as Internet of Things and cognitive computing, that mitigate such caregiver risks offer interesting business opportunities. For example, IDC forecasts that as many as 28 billion IoT devices will be installed around the world, a good proportion of which will be in the medical diagnostics arena. Thus, the opportunity to identify potential technical solutions to support seniors and their caregivers is enormous given this interconnected ecosystem.

As you attend the various presentations, exhibitions, and ad-hoc conversations, note that four major challenges remain to be addressed:

  1. Seamless integration of multi-source data: How do we identify the relevant data from multiple sources, correctly associate the data with the correct patient, and integrate the data in a secure way? Which data is most important for what types of patients?
  2. Timely and accurate source of truth: How do we enable caregivers with trusted patent information such that the appropriate professionals as well as family members can readily access, share, and potentially act on the latest updates?
  3. Decision support: How can we harness the progress in cognitive computing, data analytics, and sensory data presentation as well as visualization technologies for the benefit of the caregiver community? Which ones have the highest ROI?
  4. Post-diagnostics care support: How can we enable the treatment plan and on-going monitoring for the right level of automation? How do we integrate the patient care with billing and back office support?
